· John Schrank was born in Bavaria in 1876, emigrated with his parents in 1885
· His parents died and he went to live with his uncle, a tavern owner and landlord
· His aunt and uncle died when he was in his early 20’s and left him the properties
· His girlfriend died in the General Slocum disaster in 1904
·General Slocum steamboat caught fire and sunk in the East River in NYC
·1,342 people died
·Was distraught by all the deaths in his family
·Sold his properties and became a drifter. He became very religious
·1912 he attempted to assassinate Theodore Roosevelt in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
·Bullet went through Roosevelt’s speech on the word possessed and hit his glasses case before lodging in his chest
·Roosevelt delivered his speech as scheduled
·Doctors didn’t remove the bullet
·Schrank had a dream that President McKinley came to him and said it was Roosevelt who had killed him and telling Schrank to seek revenge.
·Schrank was declared insane and committed to an asylum in 1914
·Not allowed visitors or communication from the outside world
·Schrank died in the Central State Mental Hospital in Wisconsin

Why was he in Purgatory?
All the information I can find says he never left Wisconsin after he was committed...
